Cat Community Bulletin Board

This Cat Community Bulletin Board is for rescuers to share non-specific information about where help is needed. Very general locations only please (to protect the cats and ourselves). Any that appear too narrow will be altered by the webmistress. Visit www.4pawsfundraising.com's bulletin board (animal rescue groups exchanging  fundraising ideas) to get an idea of how this might work. Please describe situations in your community to enroll and enlist others in helping you. Visitors are invited to contact you directly to offer help with fostering/transporting/ trapping/adoption screening. Those outside your area are also invited to contact you directly with moral support, encouragement and practical recommendations. Anyone who wants to contribute financially toward a particular situation described here should contact joannaharkin@yahoo.com to insure that their donation will be tax-deductible.

This bulletin board offers a mechanism for the rescue community to help each other and to arouse interest in the plight of cats at risk. This is for those who are doing something about a situation in their community to make contact with others who might be in a position to assist. Do not overlook leaving your email address!

Monthly Drawings

To encourage and inspire everyone, once a month we will select a name from these email addresses and the lucky winner will receive a $50 certificate which may be applied to a spay or neutering. We will pay it electronically (by credit card) to your local vet or low-cost spay neuter clinic.  Selection will be made by one of ASAP's former ferals.  So -- if you rescue cats -- be sure to sign on about what you are doing in your community, especially telling about cats who need help now. Begin with your city please. Who knows .... maybe a kind benefactor will see the plight of some cats you describe and earmark a generous donation to help.  Or perhaps someone will fundraise among colleagues, neighbors, friends and relatives to help.   At a minimum each month some rescuer will be awarded $50 toward a spaying or neutering.

Please leave your comments in this public guest book so we can share your thoughts with other visitors.

Has anyone in your organization thought about the all of the animals (especially cats) that have no owners coming home and taking care of them in the face of this tradgy that has happened? I only know that living miles away from all of the horror, I think about all the furry felines that will not have the special care that they have had and want to send this to you so you know that somebody in Kansas cares.

Sincerely, Jennifer St. John ( a very concerned cat lover. My Callie is safe, and I wish I could help, but please help the cats that do not understand why there is no one to feed me or clean out my box.

I'm located on the eastern shore of Maryland and at times I am simply overwhelmed by the need for more rescue workers in my area. I manage a colony of 9 (down from thirty-something) and do what I can to help others with colonies and needy animals. I also have two foster puppies at the moment. I think ASAP is a worthy cause. Rescuers sometimes have trouble banding together, having an organization that encourages that is wonderful.

My name is Alicia Key and I hope someday to build the best organization for both homeless strays and homeless people. Yes I will provide food and shelter for both but for homeless strays I will also provide medical attention and adoption unit. For homeless people I will provide guidance like telling them drugs and alcohol are dangerous and cause serious diseases such as different types of cancer. We will also teach them the diferent types of diseases that can be harmful to their health. It's not that they are not stupid, it's just that they were never told this because they probably never any parents. Even if they did their parents probably taught them the wrong choices. That is my dream;to help others who are less fortunate. Thanks for listening!

I've been feeding homeless cats for about 7 years behind a car dealership in Long Beach, California. I also work a full time job and am away from home a lot of hours a day.

Through the years, I've managed to neuter a number of the cats and find homes or take the kittens to a pet store that would find homes but there is one female who I cannot catch because she was caught once and at that time, I took her in the trap to an organization that told me she was nursing and needed to be put back. Well, I put her back but I should have gotten her neutered first. Through the years she has continued to have litter after litter. I have managed to trap the kittens each time and get them neutered and put them back or take them to a pet store but not her.

To make matters worse, now the area where the cats are living is being bulldozed and in a very short time, a new Mercedes Dealership will be put in. The cats need to be moved to a safe location and the one female (I call her the mother of all living) needs to be caught.

I am worn out and really need help. I haven't been trapping lately so there are some older kittens now who need to be neutered but I just don't have the time and I spend a lot of time as it is, just purchasing food for them and feeding them.

Is there anyone who could offer me some assistance and help these cats? If the cats are moved, I will continue to feed or buy the food. I'm not sure how many cats are there at the present time because of the situation they are in, I don't see them all at once. There are probably 25-30. At one point, I had gotten the colony down to 7. I had been taking the cats to an organization that claimed they worked with them and found homes for them but after I found out that they were most likely just killing them on the spot, I stopped taking to them. I just didn't feel like spending all the time and energy on trapping something just to take it in to be killed. I've gotten to know all these cats.

My e-mail address is LJNICHOLXOXO@yahoo.com. Thank you.

My name is Teressa, I live in Wichita Falls, Texas. I moved her about a year ago and last spring we found a stray cat with four kittens in our shed. I love cats and own two of my own, so naturally I started feeding them, when the mother abandoned the kittens they stayed in my yard and through the winter we made them a warm covered bed to sleep in so they stay in my yard most of the time, they are in heat now and there is only one female that I am worried is already pregnant. I have seen 11 strays in my neighborhood and don't want to see anymore added to that Me and my husband are struggling to make ends meet, we don't really have the money to feed so many cats but I do it anyways and will until we leave this area which is another concern, who will be kind enough to help these strays that are so afraid of humans. So anyways what I am asking for is some assistance in how to help these cats and if there is anyone kind enough to help pay for the female to be spayed and help with the cost of shots and leukemia testing. Please if anyone can help with this problem email me at teressa23@excite.com.Thank you

Hello, I live in Prince George, B.C. and I work with feral cats. We have a group of dedicated people who provide our ferals with food and water daily. It is -32 here this week and it breaks my heart to watch these cats struggle. I will be purchasing a trailer to set up as a feral relocation site in the spring. We have recently left the Alley Cat Friends Society so we are looking for a name for our group. The cats we were caring for under ACFS we have taken them as our responsiblity we will be TNR very soon as kitten season is coming quickly. Keep up the great work you are doing.....The cats are very grateful for all you do.

Someone wrote -- "Great site, however, i think you should include links to the washington humane society's adoption and foster pages!!!" We DO on the "Who We Are" page on the right under "Cat Adoptions." It says, for cats available in WHS foster homes, "Click here." Also, we give out links to WHS and WARL sites (and Metropets) on cards available at our three adoption sites (Petsmart, Alex, VA and Oxon Hill, MD plus Petco. DC). (And they are: http://washhumane.org; http://warl.org; and http://metropets.org.) Apologies for this bulletin board not being more "on the money" but with advent of egroups, bulletins boards into disuse. -- Joanna Harkin, WDC Sunday April 7, 2002

Hello, my name is Kymberli Haywood. I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I moved in with my brothers about two years ago and found that I had a few stray cats so naturally I started feeding them. The numbers that showed up to eat rose up to thirteen plus two possums and 9 racoon. Unfortunately, all of the cats have gradually disappeared over the two years....Except for the one that I always called "Mama". She is an American Tabby with swirls instead of stripes.

When I moved in back in year 2000, she had a new litter of 4 kittens. They have all been killed (hit by cars, disease, etc.). It has taken me almost the full two years to gain her trust. She finally pushed her head against my hand as I was filling her food bowl about 6 months ago. I decided to try gradually bringing her in at night and gaining her trust so I could have her spayed.

She was pregnant again back in January and had a litter of only one. He is now my little Pumpkin and is turning 6 months old next week...he'll be the first one to the vet. As soon as I picked Mama up to take her to visit the vet after he was done nursing, I realized I was already too late. She was pregnant again and just had 3 new babies on July 10th. She is now locked indoors and separated from Pumpkin when I cannot supervise their activities.

I plan to keep all of these kittens (3 males - Sushi, Twister, and Patches) which will give me a total of 6 cats (Prissy is one that was adopted from the Animal Shelter in 2001 and she lives up to her name!). Five of my babies are in need of being spayed/neutered and getting their shots, etc. I am already struggling to make ends meet. I was hoping to find some assistance in getting them fixed and all of their shots and leukemia testing.

Please if anyone can help with this problem or if you have any helpful information, please email me at kymberli.haywood@philips.com or call at the numbers listed below.

I will continue as many of you will to enjoy this site and help to save the precious animals that don't have homes.

Thank you,

Kym

I adopted a kitten of a stray cat. She was born w/an eye ulcer, similar to herpes in humans. It flares up about every 6 months or so. I am taking her back to the vet tonight for her 3rd flare up, she's just over a year old. I was wondering if there is someway to get money for helping a stray? If not, even some advise would help? This is getting costly, and I love my kitty so much, I just want to help her :)

DEPERATELY SEEKING HELP!!!!! My sister died suddenly on New Year's. She lived in the NE area of Washington, D.C. She left behind 10 cats (indoors) and one stray that she was feeding outside. He was to be caught and neutered, fostered by her until a good home could be found. We live in Massachusetts and this adds to the difficulty in finding loving homes for these kitties. One was placed with her cat sitter, my other sister took the two 14yr. olds back to MA, and one had to be euthanized as her cancer had spread to her lungs. I am also a cat person who has 13 indoor and one outdoor kitty, plus two that I care for at my 89yr. old mother's. I cannot take any more in. My sister's remaining cats are as follows: Taz, a 1-2yo grey tabby w/white male, friendly but initially timid; Flash, a 2-3yo all black male, also friendly but timid; Amber, a 1-2yo all black female, very timid but has potential; Zoe, a 2-3yo all black female and mother of Flash, Amber and Taz, initially timid but a real pet-monger. Zoe has a large burn scar on one side which the vet said was likely from an act of extreme cruelty. She had an extra-special place in my sister's heart. The outside boy, is a long hair all grey, timid but potentially friendly cat, who we would be willing to help with vet costs to test, neuter, etc. This brings me to the two ferals, Owl and Vannah. They are about 3-4yo females, grey tabby with large patches of white, beautiful but definately feral. They need to be placed together in a home because although feral, they have thrived in an indoor home setting. They would be lost if returned to the outside. All of the kitties, with the exception of "outdoor grey kitty", are spayed/neutered, all tested negative for FELV and FIV, are shorthaired and quite "special". Some need to be boostered for shots, but appear healthy. They need special, understanding, quiet and loving homes. They have all gotten along well together, and I would love to see them go in pairs if possible. I know I am asking alot. But please, if anyone has room in their heart and home for any of these kitties, please contact me. My sister was a very loving, generous, and compassionate woman who rescued all of these on her own and took wonderful care of them. they have been as traumatized as we have regarding my sister's sudden loss. They are being cared for by their cat-sitter, but they are all alone in the house and need to be with people again before they revert to being feral. There is a time limit here also, and it is quickly running out. PLEASE if you can help feel free to call me collect at 413-536-7313. Just mention that you are calling about the cats. I hope to hear from any and all who have any help to offer. Thank you so much...Lydia.

It's nice to know there are so many people out there who are doing their best to help feed and shelter(not to mention love) stray animals. I know this site is primarily for cats but you all seem to have the same basic desire to help all animals in need. I live in rural Alabama and presently have 22 dogs(23 until a few weeks ago when I lost my dear friend Sophie, age 12). I cannot seem to turn away from a stray. Last year I picked up a very pregnant stray with a very bad case of mange. Because she was due at anytime, I was advised against dipping her until the pups(9) were weaned. This has turned out to be a serious type of mange and is taking forever to cure. It is because of this that not only can't I find them homes, but the only animal organizations that will take them, will also kill them("humane society"). To top it off, my husband found 6 puppies discarded at a river five miles from anywhere--this was after he had found another stray at the same location just weeks before. These "strays" , combined with the 5 mostly "strays" I have taken in over the last few years, are creating a real financial burden on my family(we are strapped anyway). Does anyone know where I can get help?Lisa e-mail HARBSCRAP@aol.com
